Menengai beats Simotwo to lift Rugby 7s title

Austin Sikuta guided Kenyan rugby powerhouse Menengai High School won the rugby 7s at the Rift valley Secondary Schools Sports Association at Hill School, Eldoret.

The young brother to Kenyan rugby 7s player Dan Sikuta was key man behind the Nakuru based school to beat Simotwo from Elgeyo Marakwet 27-0 in the rugby 7s final on Wednesday afternoon.

Sikuta crossed the white wash first in the first half but Anthony Mwangi missed the conversion before Bonventure Wesonga touched down for a try that was well converted by Stephen Arunga for a 12-0 first half lead.

Davies Ochieng offloaded the ball to Britton Maluki who touched down with a missed conversion by Hillary Malweye.

 

In the dying minutes, Benson Mwata and Davies Ochieng made a try each that was well converted by Anthony Kibet and a miss by Peter Ghati.

 

The final whistle ended 27-0 with the champions qualifying for the national games.

Its tactician Kennedy Njagi was said their target is to perform well at the nationals.

“We are very happy for the win and there is a bigger task ahead. We are now going to prepare for the nationals,” Njagi said.

Edwin Kosgey the Principal of Simotwo was clad for guiding the team to the finals for the first time.

He said his boys played well and they are the team to watch in the next competitions.

“Most of my boys are still young but they showed a good game.This is a good start for us and we will aiam higher next time,”Kosgey said.

To advance to the finals, Menengai beat Kipsangui 31-0 while Simotwo narrowly defeated Bwake 3-0 in the semi-final.

In the girls soccer , national champions Wiyeta from Trans Nzoia  qualified for the semi-finals after humiliating Sacred Hill Londiani 6-0.

Laventine Lihema netted a hat-trick while Esther Wafula, Rodha Wanyama and Gentrix Shikangwa each scored a goal.

In the second quarter-finals former national champion Tartar sailed to the semis after edging out AIC Sochoi 6-0.

In the boys’ soccer, Beusang and Ortum emerged victorious in their quater-final matches eliminating Edana 3-1 and 3-0 respectively.
