Five-time volleyball national secondary schools champions Cheptil Volley Boys team has set the focus to lift the title for the sixth time as term 2B of Kenya secondary schools sports Associations kicks off on Monday.
The 4th finisher at last year’s East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association will open their quest for the title against Nairobi’s Hospital Hill on Monday.
The rift valley representatives Cheptil will also be against Tetu from Central and Waa of Coast in Pool A contest.
According to school head coach Daniel Kirwa, the team is well prepared for the contest in Nyeri county.
He said they have intensified their training after qualifying during the Rift Valley region games two weeks ago at Kabarnet High school in Baringo time.
“At the moment we are finalising on our training and polishing of our skills,” Kirwa said.
Cheptil defeated Tuiyo Boys 3-1(25-27, 27-25,25-11,25-17) in the regional championships.
Kirwa said they are not leaving anything to chance since they want to top the pool in order to avoid meeting their archrivals Malava in the semifinals.
Malava beat Cheptil last year during the national games in Kisumu.
“Our target is to win all our preliminary matches and top in the pool. This is because we want to play number two in Pool B,” he said.
“It is always advisable to top the pool. We believe that our rivals Malava will top their pool and the only way to meet with them is at the finals,” Kirwa said.
Malava last year at the East and Central Africa Games beat Cheptil in the semis. Cheptil also lost the third-place playoffs against Rusumo of Rwanda.
Cheptil won the national title for the first time in 2007 and went ahead to claim in the year 2009, 2011,2012 and 2016.
The Girls teams also qualified for the nationals after beating Kabuyefwe of Trans Nzoia 3-0 (26-24,25-23,25-15).
The girls won the 2010 East and Central Africa title.
