The 11th edition of Family Bank half marathon received sponsorship deal of kshs 25 million ahead of the race set for October 8th.
This was an increased amount from last year’s kshs 19 million that was availed in Eldoret on Friday evening by Bank’s managing director Dr. David Thuku.
Thuku said the amount will be used in providing good environment in the preparations.
“As a bank, we appreciate sports in the country especially athletics that flies our Kenya flag high across the world. We are so much committed to the course of nurturing talents in the country,” said Thuku.
Race winners will pocket kshs 500,000 same as last year’s winners with the race that has produced world leading athletes starting from former world marathon record holder Wilson Kipsang, 2011 world championships marathon silver medalist Priscah Jeptoo among others.
“Our objective is to nurture talents from Kenyans, the same way we’ve been doing in the past,” added Thuku.
The annual event is slated in the Athletics’ Kenya calendar the first Sunday of October every year. With the enhanced sponsorship and the maintenance of last year’s prize kitty for winners, the lender is hopeful that the participation in this year’s race will surpass the 1000 mark. Participants are targeted from across the country. They can choose to participate either as individuals or teams. Runners will be eligible for awards in the races for which they have registered for.
The MD who also presented the sponsorship cheque to AK’s Uasin Gishu Chairman, Charles Chesire said the total cash prizes enhanced last year would be maintained at slightly over Ksh 3Million.
The Bank will advise on the registration which will be done in different athletes’ camps in Iten, Kaptagat and the bank’s branches in Eldoret West, Eldoret East, Kericho, Kapsabet, Nakuru and Kitale Branches. Registration will also be done from any other Family Bank branch country wide. The Bank will maintain its registration fee at Ksh 200. With proceeds going to support an educational cause in Eldoret.
